Bring it on. Conservative apologists for the George W. Bush crew are swinging hard these days to defend their man - and themselves - from the charge that W. and his gang misled the nation into war.

Any other sane society would have through this gang of merciless thugs in prison years ago. However, whoever said we were living in a sane society, especially one with the nutcases in Washington D.C. running the show?

Mr Corn

Well done. The documentation is superb. With the mass of information flowing in every direction on the web, i can't help but think that this story really needs to be powerfully told by a movie documentary. I have seen one or two attepmts but they were not as compelling as your short piece here.

Keep this type of analysis up.

Ooops....Sorry John Connolly I accidently hit the wrong symbol in response to your comment. I wanted to give your excellent comment a thumbs-up. Unfortunately, the only way to correct my mistake was to respond.

Watch any debate on this or any other issue: Today's "conservatives" never defend their position by responding to accusations from the other side, no matter how substantiated or rational (or true) those accusations may be. Instead, they resort to finger-pointing, name-calling and more lies. They do not offer up facts. They always take the offensive, even if it means repeating discredited information or spreading new lies. They never defend because they know there is nothing TO defend. And they also know that, whether the "American public has come to understand this" or not, most Americans don't care enough to turn off Fox News and do something about it.

Included in the Bush administration's propoganda campaign to build public support for the war they intended to wage were repeated allegations by Bush that Saddam was lying when denying his possession of WMDs. Many Americans instead believed that it was Bush who was lying and they were proven right.
Saddam was executed. But liars Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, et al have never been held accountable (especially by the American news media) for the mass destruction, death, misery and cost their war crimes caused. One media excuse for not at least impeaching Bush was that it would block Congress from working on more important matters the nation faced then and still does - very much like how current Republican obstructionism are blocking the now Democratic-controlled White House and Congress from implementing anything that might gain them votes in 2010 and 2012.

Sir, please follow up this article with factual refutations of British, German, French, Italian, Russian, Egyptian and Israeli intelligence agency reports that Saddam Hussein maintained, and grew, a robust WMD program. Additionally, I'd further like to see your report and interviews with former Iraqi Army and Air Force Generals on their understanding and plans for use of WMD armaments.

What are your sources? Please identify the reports, Iraqi Army and Air Force Generals. Have you seen them?

And the vast unified majority of senators and congresspersons from both parties, tripped over each others jerking knees to accept the Bush /Cheney fantasy fabrication and rubber stamp it.If voting could change anything it would be illegal.

Bravo to a clear summary of the truth. As a Vietnam era Veteran I am outraged at the cavalier way men like Bush,Rumsfeld Chaney and Rove are so willing to kill thousands of civilians and sicken, kill and maim hundreds of thousands more for political points. They have never seen combat or smelled death. They should be tried as war criminals.

A couple days ago I saw the video titled blueprint for truth from http://www.ae911truth.org/

Every American should see it and be shocked and ashamed and mad as hell. Have YOU? I haven't seen you before, maybe you have already publicized it? If not why not?

I say this because your short words "bush lied" pale in comparison to what he really did.

It would be a NIE to the groin for the Bush Fascists, but sadly, they have denied the truth since 2001. Bush came into office with the intention of going to war with Iraq. Intelligence gathers were ordered to find a justification.

Bush and Co. would have taken any excuse to play army in Iraq, but they had 9/11. So that became their mantra. For them it was war at all costs.

So they took us to war based on a lie.

What is really sad is that the current White House has stated that they will not do anything about it. History shows that Dems have an unfortunate habit of covering up Republican crimes.

Its not just about the war. It is about the torture, assinations, the bribes, the mispent Billions of dollars. And let us not forget the spying on Americans under the Patriot Act.

+4 # Guest 2010-03-17 17:59
RonaldV4 - You're almost correct. It isn't JUST about the wars. It IS about the torture, bribes, the rescission of Habeas Corpus, the use of bills of attainder, the illegal searches, and all the rest.

Never the less, lying us into war is a big deal. I knew he was lying at the time. How? Because Hans Blix and the rest of the UN Inspectors were standing right in front of us, being almost ignored by our media, quietly and constantly saying "we have found no evidence that Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction. And Mohamed ElBaradei (IAEA) was standing next to them saying he was "pretty convinced" that Iraq had not rebuilt its nuclear weapons program.

We are responsible for the consequences because we were willfully gullible, but just because we let ourselves be conned, doesn't mean the [neo-] con man should go unpunished.

We the People know that they lied about Iraq, what we need to know is what lies have they told us about ALL of 9/11. Once a liar always a Liar, that is what the people of this nation must conclude after reading the facts that the Bush criminal Organization have tried to shove down our throats with the complicity of their agents in Congress. It's time to open up an investigation on Cheney's murder for hire hit squads and see how many Americans were murdered by these liars and their agents.

-9 # Guest 2010-03-17 13:01
While it is certainly true that the claims made by Bush/Cheney were not justified by the facts, are we forgetting that many high level democrats had made the same claims before our invasion?

Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Jay Rockerfeller, John Kerry, and a host of lesser opposition stars said the same things.

I think probably neither the democrats nor the republicans lied -- I suspect both were tragically mistaken in their beliefs.

Lee Nason

Republicans are very good at rewriting history----it's the only way they can stay out of prison!
Bush, Cheney, Powell--lied, murdered and stole trillions from the US treasury---hang up high!

-5 # Guest 2010-03-17 13:32
Whether Bush lied is inconsequential because, as Repubs are fond of pointing out, Clinton and all the Dems were using the same talking points.
America needs to grow up and realize that politicians in both parties are worthless liars who murder innocent people in the name of Democracy.
George Bush did not start this war, the CIA was killing people in Iraq throughout the 90's and the Air Force was dropping bombs on civilian targets whenever they detected radar signals on an almost daily basis.
The only reason to make it seem that we were somehow at peace before Bush is because liberal elitists like to look down on middle America. That's why they demonize Bush as a cowboy even though he is actually a New England frat boy.

When Obama took control and started expanding the war, providing a legal cover for torture, bullying China and South America and cementing Bush's decision to provide immunity for illegal surveillance, the liberals all stopped complaining. Go figure.

Very Good Article! I came out of my Chair in March of 2002 when Bush W Started his Propaganda! I was LIED to in 1965 by a President and Hawks! I told People in 199, 2000 that Bush was a Stone Cold Liar!! And now Bush Claimed on National TV that "His God Told him to Invade!! There is one BIG diference Between Charles Manson and W. Bush, Bush Murdered more! Bush Manipulated America Like Charles Manson Did!!

Obama has already given these liars a carte-blanche to continue their lying by refusing to bring them to trial. He said he was doing it to keep from tying up the government- but what difference did it make? They are still tied up, and the health care bill is a disgrace. Nothing else has been done. So if Obama had rusued prosecution against these traitors, at least he'd have one plus in his corner.

_______________ _______________ _________
I have yet to see any reference to the Military Critical Technologies List, DOD's official periodic assessment of what every country has in the way of weapons. That, too, declared prior to the war that Iraq had no working WMD programs.

War opponents and some Congressional Democrats have pointed to a statement Powell made on Feb. 24, 2001, while meeting at Cairo's Ittihadiya Palace with Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa.
Asked about the sanctions placed on Iraq, which were then under review at the Security Council, Powell said the measures were working. In fact, he added, "(Saddam Hussein) has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors."

The march to war was, without a doubt, agenda based. The eight neocons brought onboard by Cheney advocated regime change in Iraq, and Bush was perhaps swayed in that direction. But he apparently never looked back.

So my question is (remains), why did we go after Saddam Hussein after 9/11? An a priori agenda, perhaps?

And why did we fall for the Bush admin's lies regarding its justification?

As God is my witness, I never did.

Of course it's just possible that the government's security information was flawed ... yeah, right! ;~)

I'll make a prediction. There will ultimately be an admission as such, and by an insider. I feel that that person's initials are .... no, I won't go that far. But there was someone whom I have long regard as an unwilling participant. I predict that that person my ultimately reveal the truth.

Peace,
Beau

Another lie were the repeated statements by the Bush Administration that it hadn't made up its mind to invade Iraq but was still pursuing diplomatic negotiations. From behind-the-scenes statements at the time by those involved, invasion was a done deal when Bush was making these assertions.

Dear Mr. Corn: Outstanding article, along with similar articles by William Rivers Pitt and others that I have read today. I ask one question: how do we get the RWNM to SHUT THE &8*! UP? What was noise literally the day after Obama's inauguration has become a cacophonous roar by the middle of last year. The RW is getting crazier by the minute. The Left, on the other hand, if one judges by the MSM, is non-existent. While the "Left" is not a homogeneous group like the Right, we need to get a little bit of Limbaughitus, the "lemming approach. Why can't we all call our congressperson and e-mail the President, as I have done repeatedly over the last year, DEMANDING a strong public option, and no more war? David, if you have ideas about this, I want to hear them. The left is the new "silent majority."

If anybody says "everyone" believed there were WMDs in Iraq, just say six little words: Hans Blix, Scott Ritter, Phil Donohue.
That should take care of that.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the "Downing Street Memo" in which British intel experts concluded re the Iraq invasion that the Bush administration had been "twisting the facts to obtain a desired result."

In governmental operations and foreigh affiars truth has never been a requirement in any sovereign nation on planet earth. That likely will not change. Truth is only a temporary refuge of governments.

How in the hell can the USA put to trial it's war criminals when we have a Supreme Court and a congress which sell themselves to the highest bidders? The highest bidder being the right wing consevatives liars, murderers, thieves, corporate crooks and the religious right wing which is nothing but pure hypocrisy!

As long as justice is for sale in America, there will be no justice! They are responsible for the USA decaying into degradation and criminality throughout the world.

Millions around the world did not believe the lies at the time and marched in the street and did the utmost to speak out and stop this insane rush to war. The USA as a country was so used to fighting lopsided wars that were quick and relatively casualty free on the USA side, that the mainstream press promoted it like the premier of a new Hollywood blockbuster...

Until major regime change happens in Washington...until a crisis of conscience so overwhelms and devastates this culture that it's very survival depends upon a complete exposure of it's darkest heart, complete restitution, comprehensive conviction of all of our political criminals, and I mean every last one of them...our greatness will continue to fade unto oblivion. If the American people cannot bring themselves to justice, justice will be brought to them from without, and we will pay dearly for it. Yes, we will. We are not invincible. We are not above nature's law, if we are any other. American exceptionalism from the notion of "manifest destiny" forward is a lie. The world doesn't have to put up with us and totally devastating ourselves economically with bigger and bigger arsenals won't save us. If you are truly listening there are prophets out there. All of them are telling us to take heed and wake up.
Its about time, don't you think?
What are you waiting for?

Oh boo-hoo, Bush and his gang lied to us! Wasn't this obvious to any thinking person watching poor Collin Powell present the "evidence" for WMD at the UN? Couldn't everyone see that the case was entirely bogus? Every good con-man knows that "you can't cheat an honest man". The American people wanted to be lied to and were eager to swallow any lie to justify doing something to hit back. Until people start thinking more sceptically and stop just reacting impulsively, nothing will change.
