Can Jeb Bush Save the GOP?

By Joe Conason, The National Memo

21 February 12

umors and whispers of a late presidential bid by Jeb Bush are difficult to consider seriously - if only because the deadlines to enter primary contests have past, the necessary money and campaign staff are not in place, and the mechanisms for a "brokered convention" do not exist. And yet some worried Republicans are evidently imagining a rescue by the former Florida Governor.

Such fantasies arise from the unappetizing choices that now confront Republican voters. But if Jeb Bush were to enter the field, as he has wisely declined to do so far, the public scrutiny that has damaged the current candidates so badly would turn toward him - and swiftly reveal an enormous deadweight of political baggage. What Florida voters once accepted (or ignored) might well horrify the national electorate today.

The first obstacle that Jeb would have to surmount is that to most Americans outside the Sunshine State, he is known only as the brother of George W. Bush, most recently named one of the two worst presidents in the past half-century by respondents to a Gallup poll - rated just above the late Richard M. Nixon, in fact. It's a negative accomplishment that should not be "mis-underestimated," as the former president himself might say.

Only a professional politician or a right-wing pundit - the sort of deep thinkers mulling a Jeb boomlet - could believe that most Americans would receive the idea of another Bush presidency with any emotion except loathing. Not much would have to be said or done to remind voters of this century's catastrophic first decade, and why they might not wish to risk putting a third Bush in the Oval Office.

Leaving aside the historic burden of his family name, Jeb Bush carries a resume of dubious episodes that stretch back three decades, to his early days as a Florida real estate developer and consultant, when he told reporters that he intended to become "very wealthy." Among the partners he encountered in that quest was one Miguel Recarey, whose International Medical Centers was accused of one of the largest Medicare swindles of all time. Before Recarey fled the country ahead of several federal indictments, Jeb had made a call on his behalf to Health and Human Services Secretary Margaret Heckler - a Cabinet secretary serving at the pleasure of his father, George Herbert Walker Bush, who was then president. Recarey paid him $75,000 for that lobbying errand, which forestalled government action to stop Recarey's skimming of millions in Medicare dollars. Although Jeb has denied that Recarey - a mob associate - paid him to call Heckler, both the fugitive and the former HHS secretary have since confirmed those circumstances.

Jeb soon did amass a fortune in real estate, mostly with the assistance of the Cuban-American community in South Florida. He returned the favor by seeking a presidential pardon from George H.W. Bush for the late Orlando Bosch, a murderous anti-Castro militant denounced by his father's own Attorney General Richard Thornburgh as "an unreformed terrorist" responsible for killing dozens of innocent people.

Although he never hesitates to denounce government regulation and praise the unfettered free market, Jeb didn't exactly reject the federal teat when one of his own investments went south during the savings-and-loan crisis. With an infusion of more than $4.5 million from the Treasury, Jeb and his partners managed to hold onto a downtown Miami office building in 1989 that they soon sold for $8.7 million. In other words, Bush benefited from a government "bailout."

There is much more to the Jeb saga, including his vow to sign legislation that would have awarded Florida's disputed electoral votes to his brother in November 2000, and his ill-advised attempts to intervene in the case of Terry Schiavo, the brain-dead woman whose husband and parents sued each other over whether to turn off her respirator and end her life. The public regarded interference in that sad matter by Congressional leaders and other right-wing politicians as an opportunistic exploitation of tragedy - and the Schiavo affair became a turning point leading up to the 2006 Republican midterm debacle.

What Newt, Mitt and the rest of the Republican cohort have learned is how unflattering stories that faded years ago become suddenly vivid under the campaign's glare. Unless he is truly the smarter Bush - and ignores all this presidential daydreaming - the same lesson awaits brother Jeb.

Good grief! The last thing this country needs is another Bush in the White House. The last one should be in prison. Too bad the teabaggers had to kick out so many Republicans for not being conservative enough, we can see what a bunch of idiots they were left with.

Don't vote Republican !!

There is too much at stake.

I think, Barbara K, that the count is two that should be in prison. Dad Bush told enough lies to get us into the Gulf War to earn a cell next to Jr.

Total agreement.

Dad Bush had the United Nations backing him. He didn't destroy the Iraq Government. He figured out that you couldn't stimulate the economy and cut the deficit by tax cuts for millionaires. Of course when he raised taxes, he was dropped by the Repugs.
But don't confuse him with his stupid son.

+21 # X Dane 2012-02-21 17:58
Jack, that is not necessary, he has enough dirt on his hands from the Iran Contra scandal. He was very involved in that, for Reagan was not "with it" being in the early stages of Alzheimer's.

There is a whole lot that has mostly been under the radar, in regard to papa Bush.

He is not innocent, but was involved in a lot of murky affairs.

+7 # Holyone 2012-02-22 03:50
No, but he was still stupid. He had the same Social agenda as all Repug. He only wanted to seem moderate to get a second term. Why do you think that Little Bush went to the White house with all of his Father's Cronies?

Al Republicans are the same with the same agenda.

Even moreso Barbara, there are a few Supreme Court Justices likely to retire in this decade. A vote for Republicans anywhere or anytime is a vote for the same illogical type of thinking behind the Citizens United decision. Any moron could have seen what the result would be and only a group of idealogues could have arrived at their decision. Imagine, one of the factors cited by the "learned" judges was that “scant evidence” existed to substantiate the risk of corporate manipulation of elections. If you are looking for evidence of alien life on Earth...you don't have to look any further than some of the judges on the Supreme Court!! Either that or they have spent most of their lives with blinders on for one reason or another.

If the Rethuglicans ran a ticket of Michael Moore and Stephen Colbert, I think President Obama might have a run for his money. I'd certainly consider these two when I was in the voting booth. In fact, I could suggest a few other for cabinet positions.

Just ignore the right wing nuts and zealots. We can run this country without them.

There's a saying: "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." Or...as George W. so inarticulately put it: "Fool me once, shame on you...you fool me....you can't be fooled again."
Another Bush in the White House??? I'm no fool! No thanks.

HORRORS!!! Can this have been the GOP's plan all along? Float Mitt the worthless and a field of lunatics in front of the US voters for a year, then ride Jeb Bush in as a "savior"??? Or, could they be flashing Jeb Bush in front of voters to show how bad it COULD get if they don't square up and support Mitt or one of the others?? The whole thing seems more twisted and campy than a Batman episode! Stay tuned? I think not, the GOP has insulted the voting public with their debate/reality series and the poor quality candidates they have entertained. We need leadership!! We need someone who will tell us something except they want to stop Obama! We DO NOT NEED another Bush in the White House!

The main push for Jeb Bush or Mitch Daniels from establishment Republicans is to blunt the effect on other office holders of an Obama landslide. Both wives are against running. A terrible debacle might so injure the President that running would be attractive. But to whom? If the debacle saves some Republican seats, then why not Romney? Might as well let him be the sacrificial lamb. He can raise the money.

To the GO-Pee, I say: Bring him (Jeb) on! Joe you list just a fraction of the thuggery Jeb engaged in over the last 4 decades. His specialty in his shady real estate dealings, as well as all of his family is simply: obtaining federally-guaranteed jumbo loans, defaulting on them, then turning around and buying the properties for a penny or two on the dollar! The height of corruption! They consider the U.S. Treasury their personal slush fund! The deal to sell pumps to New Orleans and India on which he and his partner defaulted at U.S. government expense is yet another example! His longtime girlfriend, Cynthia Henderson, whom he hired at a big salary and who is still in a high-paid job in Tallahassee (sorry, Columba) His many treacherous and murderous dealings with Miami Cuban expats, blowing up cars and planes, murdering the cigarboat manufacturer, the longtime entangelement of the GOP with the mob--oh, this will be a lark outing his criminal past, the "Octopus" (hsi father), bring it on!

We are already into the Bush 3rd term - having another Bush figurehead would make absolutely no difference. Jeb could "win" too, just like Scrub "won" two times with the "help" of his friends - and Obama would say nothing, just like Gore and Kerry (who actually won). It's a one party two headed system.

"It's not the people who vote that count. It's the people who count the votes."

Get real - if Jed Bush ran the Republicans would support him and Democrats are so fed-up with Obama's centrist Wall Street baby sitting that they'd stay home before they'd bother to vote between Bush and Obama and possibly end up with another Gore - Bush botched Supreme Court interfere-with-state-government (another Republican hypocrisy).

Obama eroded his base when he left them to be buried alive by wrongful foreclosures and segregated good hard working people from "responsible" "current" homeowners yet to have been damaged and abused by Wall Street. Pushing the bogus AG Settlement was merely a favor to the banks and 99% of Americans do not like that. This is not going to stabilize the economy.

Obama would be better off to build a new prison for his Bankster pals or step back and let another untarnished Democrat run for President. At least LBJ knew when to fold 'em.

Vietnam was a great example of LBJ knowing when to fold 'em.

LBJ believed in the need for Vietnam. He was wrong, but he couldn't, in good conscience, continue to run for President, knowing full well that he was bringing down his own party. So yes, he DID know when to fold them.

He gave the Talk Show Hosts a lot to make fun of!
He taught us how bad the education system is.
He was a Role Model for Imbeciles.
He proved anyone could run and win the Presidency.
He gave the Terrorists Food and Shelter.(supposedly this counts in religion so we must let it be as such)
He pretended to have Religion as did his wife.
He gave the Military a whole new meaning.
He gave alcohol a whole new meaning.
He did show how corrupt the GOP is, Corporations always were.
He made the Oil companies Richer.

I realize those are not the top ten list you were looking for but they do hold water.

I can't think of one - I was never a fan. But he did do 2 things that Obama has yet to match. Bush allowed Lehman to fail and had a conservator placed on Fannie & Freddie, for what it's worth. The bailout was perfectly timed ...they are clever fellas.

I'm not pro-right. I'm just callin' it as I sees it. If they run Jed we're in for a tough fight. And we have nobody to blame but Obama. He's sitting on the throne while they printed unknown trillion$. He's surrounded by Wall Street goons - his choice. We have 47% of Americans a paycheck away from poverty and 24 million that don't know it yet but they have no retirement or pension funds.

I disagree with your first paragraph and agreed with the rest. People will vote in this election to keep repugs out. But, you're absolutely right about Obama and LBJ. If Obama had any sense of honor he'd try to DESERVE our vote rather than just sitting back and allowing repug insanity to make him look good in comparison without actually doing anything.

Should Jeb Bush be able to enter the GOP, it will be proof enough that democracy in the US is as dead as most of us think it is.

It is a pity that Obama sold out those he promised 'hope and change' to; that said, it is my opinion that if Obama was to get a second term, it would be a whole new ball game.

Wonder if they'll dredge up Catherine Harris to cook the books for Jeb B' like she did to the Florida electorate. He's a bit smarter that dimwits but never forget -he's a part of the Bush dynasty and that should be enough to be throwin' up the hands and boltin' the doors.
I mean, the Kennedy's were also a dynasty but were targeted as "Any Kennedy who got into a position of power" for elimination by the rulers of this country, the CIA-Military-death machine, who appear to love the Bush-Mafia.
I have heard and read -on the alternative media of course- that J' Bush was actually intended (by his dad for one) to be the 2000 candidate which G' was slid into (as the most incurious and malleable) by the machinations of those who knew Cheney would never be elected pres' but who was the real favored force to head and drive the "Project for a New American Century" crowd and of course the ever growing "National Security State".
I remember my old bumper sticker post 2000 "One person, one vote -Not applicable in all states!

I have contended for some time that a brokered convention is exactly what those holding the Republican reins want to do. By allowing Mitt, Newt, Ron, and Rick to pummel each other during the primaries, Jeb and Chris Cristy are keeping their powder dry and reserving their forces. They may get bloodied after entering the race, but at that point, who else would the Republicans have? Don't forget: Republican operatives have got a third party on all state ballots and yet still do not have a candidate. You can be sure that Rove isn't sitting back, letting these Bozos run off with the nomination.

Not surprised--there were reports of push-polling in NH and NY ahead of the NH primary to see Obama V Jeb, and I got a similar call in NYC.

GOP leadership is desperate right now and it would be typical that they were trying to game the primaries in order to give themselves an excuse to broker the convention.

Just what we need another Bush aka shrub. But it sure would stimulate the T-shirt industry. Instead of the printing reading: "a small town in Texas is missing a village idiot" it could be "a small town in Florida is missing a village idiot". But no thanks, we do not need another Bush. But if the Republicans give him a blessing to run, Every Dem would vote for Obama. I am not happy with Obama's total performance but anything is better then another bought and paid for Bush.

The lesser of two evils? The is the game that has been played on us for decades. The Social Engineers have the American public completely figured out - on every level. Offer up McCain to represent the continuation of the Bush policies (which the public was disgusted with) against populist rhetoric represented by Obama (that the public wanted to believe) - presto, didn't even have to rig the election, the people fell for it lock, stock, and barrel.

That's what you get when you vote for the lesser of two evils.

American's vote for who they think will win, like it was a bet or something. Principles are a minor consideration.

The beatings will continue until the morale improves :]

Republicans have short memories. It doesn't matter what George and Chaney did - they just do not want Obama. I agree this was a plan because of the history - get the base so disgusted with the choices and then anybody will look good... Even another Bush.

Dems are in trouble and if you think Obama is going to change you are naive. It is what it is. That's why Geithner was in the plan and all of this Goldman Sachs appointments. WFO is right. Once you are in - you'd don't magically get out. Sad but true.

I think it's about who's reading the articles and when. I think a lot of people read these articles right away and quickly get their vote in without joining the conversation.

Right now, we're getting pretty close to the election, so a lot of left wants to stop discussing anything wrong with Obama. The problem is that, if he doesn't even feel any pressure from his base when he's campaigning, when will he EVER feel the need to listen to us?

The Republican Party will continue in its current death spiral as long as it represents militarism and exploitation and keeps putting up neocon candidates that support military aggression and the surveillance state. Those who want to support and conserve the liberal values of the American Revolution cannot help but be repelled by the ongoing onslaught of Republican politicians against peace, prosperity, and liberty.

The Republicans certainly cannot improve their future by running another Bush family member!

I'm one of those who see at least an unconscious story line that leads to the Republican convention and a late entry dark horse saviour coming in. Avoiding a year of national scrutiny, saving a lot of time and money, and leaving the party with no choice for anyone who can rally the troops to beat Obama is a good plan for them. Then create monthly distractions to keep people looking elsewhere away from Jeb's history too closely including more shenanigans to game the votes. Obama can lose, and Jeb can be rehabbed to the satisfaction of enough people to make it a contest. As someone else has said, Obama is not much better then another Bush anyway.

I don't care HOW disappointed anyone is with the Obama Presidency at this moment in time. What matters MOST in the next four years is "Which Party Will Finally Tip the Balance on the Supreme Court"?

The answer MUST be the Democrats. And we have Obama. Therefore...it's a no brainer. The actions of the SC will far outweigh the actions of the NEXT four Presidents.

OBAMA 2012 - BUSH?...NEVER AGAIN!!!!

I live in Florida and have watched Jeb run for office. He is as cool as the other side of the pillow, and speaks perfect Spanish. His wife is beautiful, and he has a very cute smile. He is a very clever man who knows how to win, or help his brother win.
In 2000 there were reports of police intimadation in Northern Florida as blacks were stopped on the road, given big traffic tickets for doing nothing, just so they would go home and tell their friends and family not to go to vote. blacks were also visited by sheriffs up north with large guns on their side asking old black ladies if they were going to vote next week, etc. all were reported in the news. never made the national headlines. if you think the butterfly ballot was a "mistake" think again. even though a democractic lady in charge was said to mess up, Jeb's hand may have had a lot to do with that fiasco. the language of counting the votes was also a "problem."
but the main think is that he can win. never underestimate the Bushes. that would be stupid. and remember, palin almost won against obama even though w. was the president for eight years. the final tally was 49 vs 51 million votes. only one percent? shows you that anyone can win in this very easily manipulated country. black and white answers to complex questions are preferred by too many people. womem, gays and blacks all vote republican, so what does that tell you?

bobby t. what you say is disgusting ...and scary....but I believe you. And in these days, with all the money available for "Swift Boating" people. Anything can happen.

I would LIKE to think that Jeb Bush could never win.....But as you say, it COULD happen, so let's hope he will not get in the race.

I do believe he will run in 2016, hoping that enough time has passed, and we have all forgotten his brother's misdeeds. I sure hope not.

FORGET THE BUSH CRIME FAMILY! FORGET ANY REPUBLICANS/BAGGERS! THEY ARE TRYING TO DESTROY THE COUNTRY (BY THEIR OWN ADMISSION)SO THEY CAN MAKE PRES. OBAMA LOOK BAD! ANY PARTY THAT WOULD ALLOW THE AMERICAN CITIZENS TO SUFFER, SHOULD NEVER SEE ANOTHER DAY IN ANY GOVERNMENT OFFICE!

If you are in favor of assisted suicide, by all means vote Republican. As for the country itself, it already has two strikes against it thanks to the first two Bushes; a third Bush would complete our descent into third world dom.
